MSU Taxonomic Subdatabase

About

This database lists specimens from the Michigan State Brain Collection. The taxonomic classification of each specimen is listed including the Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. Two systems of classification are used.

Listings for mammals under MSpW93 are from Mammal Species of the World: A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference (Smithsonian Series in Comparative Evolutionary Biology) by Don E. Wilson (Editor), Deeann Reeder (Editor) 1206 pages 2nd Ed. edition (March 1993) Washington DC:Smithsonian Institution Press; ISBN: 1560982179. This is a widely accepted standard for mammals.

Mammalian listings under McKenna98 are from Classification of Mammals : Above the Species Level, by Malcolm C. McKenna, Susan K. Bell, George Gaylord Simpson, (January 1998) New York: Columbia Univ Press; ISBN: 023111012X

The Numeric Taxonomic Indicator is derived from the USIS (Universal Species Identification System) described in Mammal Species of the World : A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference edited by James H. Honacki, Kenneth E. Kinman, and James W. Koeppl. Publisher --Lawrence, Kan. : Allen Press and the Association of Systematics Collections, 1982.

The numbers used for this purpose in this database are truncated versions of those listed in Honacki et al. The numbers designating subspecies and those designating taxa above the Class level have been eliminated for the mammalian specimens. Simple arbitrary numbers have been used for species for which no USIS number could be located. This number is useful for sorting records into reasonable phylogenetic ordinal arrangements.

The Animal Numbers for the Michigan State Collection carry the following information. The first two digits represent the year of acquisition. The third digit gives some information about the purpose of acquring the specimen - 0 is a normal marsupial or monotreme specimen, 1 is an experimental specimen, 2 is a normal specimen, 3 is a cat, 4 is an opossum, and 5 is a raccoon. The last two digits represent the sequence during that year in which the specimen was acquired.
